Hungarians scientists discover the world’s smallest snail species
Formerly, the smallest land mollusc was a species found in Borneo in 2015, but thanks to an international research group led by Barna Páll-Gergely, the staff member of the Plant Protection Institute at Eötvös Lóránd Research Network’s Centre for Agricultural Research.
The now named Angustopila psammion and Angustopila coprologos species were discovered in a cave in northern Vietnam, MTI reported.
Travelo reports that the volume of the animal (Angustopila psammion) is approximately 0.036 m3 and the width of its shell is 06.-0.68 mmm, while it is only 0.46-0.57 mm tall.
ELKH also notes that the research introducing the discovery was also published in the renowned Contributions to Zoology professional magazine.
These species are interesting, because the place tiny mudballs on their shells. Since these mudballs are most likely made up of the faeces of the snails, its name (Angustopila coprologos )means “faeces collector”, while the other’s name means “grain of sand”.
